Humming Right Along!
These 3 young girls were enjoying the music provided by the North Shore Community Band at WTIP’s Radio Days in Grand Marais.  I wanted to get up and dance, too, but didn’t  … adult inhabitions, I suppose.  Why did I repress that opportunity for JOY?

Art, Fear, and Control

My next MUST READ is “Art and Fear: Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking" by Ted Bayles & Ted Orland.

Here’s a quote from the book:

Control, apparently, is not the answer. People who need certainty in their lives are less likely to make art that is risky, subversive, complicated, iffy, suggestive or spontaneous. What’s really needed is nothing more than a broad sense of what you are looking for, some strategy for how to find it, and an overriding willingness to embrace mistakes and surprises along the way. Simply put, making art is chancy– it doesn’t mix well with predictability. Uncertainly is the essential, inevitable and all-pervasive companion to your desire to make art. And tolerance for uncertainty is the pre-requisite to succeeding.

Thanks to Wes Fryer (Moving at the Speed of Creativity Blog) for the hat-tip and lead to the quote!  Wes remarks that these ideas apply not only to making art, but to the design of meaningful educational experiences for students, as well.

Coming to the close of a long, long day … We were under these clouds about an hour later … Heavy rain, hail, and LOTS of cloud-to-ground lightening. That was about the most exciting thing that happened today.

And … Back on the road again … Just can’t wait to get on the road again … Life I love is …

Home again!  We’ve unpacked, washed clothes, paid the bills, and scrubbed the cats a bit … now it’s time to think about packing up again for BIG TRIP #2 … or is this big trip #3 … or #4.  I think I’ve lost track this summer!

Good morning, Copper Harbor, MI!

This is our last day on the road … For a couple of days, anyway.

Kitties - here we come!

Read all about it! Can’t wait to get there …

No … This isn’t our ferry, but it sure is a cute little boat! The Maleo.

Our ferry is the M. S. Chi-Cheemaun. It is 365 feet long and holds 143 cars and 638 passengers. My pictures are on the camera and will have to be posted later when I have both Internet access and enough battery juice to download them to the laptop. Such is our electronic life!

You can read all about the ferry at http://www.ontarioferries.com

We will be disembarking on Manitoulin island … The largest island in a freshwater lake that has lakes with islands that also have lakes with islands … And so on …

Gray (grey) morning … Left State College and enjoyed a beautiful bee-YOU-tee-full drive through the Allegenys (Allegenies?) into New York.

However, about 15 miles into NY State we came over a rise and were greeted by the State Patrol stopping traffic in both directions on Hwy 219! I scrambled for car papers and IDs, but they just took a quick look into the car and waved us through … Looked like they were pulling over all the cars that contained young 20-something men … Never did find out what that was all about.

Our entry into Canada couldn’t have been smoother. Just waited in line a short time, answered a few questions, and then we were in a foreign country!

It took a long time to find our way out of the Toronto area, although we were never really headed in the wrong directions. The big “oh,oh” only led us to a nice place for lunch and a Starbucks for coffees. I sure do miss having an Internet connection on the road, though … spoiled techie brat!

Tobermory by 7:30 pm. Beautiful evening and a good walk around the harbor. Looking forward to having a little more time to explore tomorrow before the ferry ride to Manitoulin Island.

Nightie night!
